Concept Explanation

Untouchability

Untouchability is a practice where certain groups, mainly people from lower castes, are treated as "outcastes" or "untouchables" by society, especially by those from upper castes. These individuals were historically not allowed to interact with people from upper castes, and were often excluded from public places, denied basic rights, and faced extreme social discrimination. Untouchability was the harshest form of caste inequality in India.
